Policies
Ofsted expects schools to have comprehensive policies covering safeguarding, pupil welfare, teaching and learning, and staff conduct. Key policies include those for child protection (including a single central record and procedures for handling concerns) and ensuring staff are suitable and have the necessary skills to safeguard children effectively. Schools should also have policies on behaviour, attendance, personal development (including awareness of protected characteristics), and curriculum.

Key policy areas
- Safeguarding and child protection:
This is a critical area that includes having a positive safeguarding culture, putting pupils' interests first, and ensuring staff are suitable and trained. Policies must cover the single central record (SCR), recording of concerns, and how to respond to incidents.

- Personal development and welfare:
Ofsted expects schools to have policies that promote pupils' personal development, including an awareness and understanding of protected characteristics, and a general commitment to welfare and wellbeing.

How policies are inspected
- Reviewing records:
Inspectors will review documents like the single central record (SCR) and records of concerns and incidents.
- Talking to staff and pupils:
They will discuss safeguarding and other policies with staff and students to ensure they are being implemented effectively.
- Assessing culture:
Inspectors look for evidence of a positive culture, not just written policies, especially in areas like safeguarding and promoting respect for diversity.
- Looking at implementation:
Policies must be put into practice. For example, a policy on teaching the protected characteristics is not enough; inspectors will evaluate the school's effectiveness in actually teaching them.
