Attendance & Punctuality

At Crowcroft Park Primary School, we are dedicated to supporting every pupil in reaching their full potential. Regular school attendance plays a vital role in academic achievement, and we encourage all pupils to attend every day.

This attendance page provides all the key information you need about attendance at Crowcroft Park Primary School.

 Attendance Policy

Unfortunately, attendance at school has become an increasing problem across the UK and this is leading to poorer lifetime outcomes for children. We want Crowcroft Park children to have the very best primary education. We do a huge amount to support our families in many different ways, but we need you to help us if we are to make a big difference. We are therefore sharing some clear messages with you about attendance:

Excellent pupil attendance is incredibly important for the individual child. Pupils who miss days at school learn less and achieve lower grades. They also miss out on essential activities and find socialising more difficult. Returning to school having missed learning creates anxiety for children. Repeated absences lead to poor work ethic that persists into adulthood.

Poor pupil attendance affects the whole class. When one or two children are missing every day, teachers have to spend time reintegrating those children and catching them up – this stops them from moving forward with the whole class – it is a serious problem.

Pupil attendance is the legal responsibility of parents. It is the parents’ job to teach children about work ethic, responsibility and commitment. It is the parents’ job to ensure that children are ready for school (well-fed, fit, healthy and well-rested). We provide high-quality, interesting and carefully planned education every single day of the school year, but we cannot teach children who are not here.

If children are very unwell, they should stay at home – otherwise they should be in school. If you are unsure, please talk to us.

If you would like to discuss attendance further, please visit the school office to arrange an appointment with Miss Muldoon.

A huge thank you is extended to all of those families who ensure that their children come to school as often as possible. We notice and value the effort made to ensure that children have good attendance!

For too many children, attendance is poor in Nursery.

The beginning of school is the most important time for children’s learning: it is essential that all children develop good attendance habits at this early age and that they are well-prepared for the start of formal schooling in Reception. Nursery is a fun and exciting experience – not to be missed!

We strongly urge parents of children in Nursery to work as a family to significantly improve attendance urgently. We are here to help and support you!

For too many children in Reception, attendance is not good enough.

By the end of the Reception year, children are assessed against a milestone called the ‘Good Level of Development’ (GLD). Achieving this milestone ensure that children are ready for Year 1 and that they are successful throughout school. We know hat children with poor attendance are highly unlikely to achieve GLD.

We strongly urge parents of children in Reception to work as a family to give their children the very best start in life and significantly improve attendance. We are here to help and support you!

Year 1 is an important year – particularly for Reading. It is our goal that all children pass the Phonics Screening Test at the end of Year 1 so that they can begin learning more complex Reading skills in Year 2.

A large group of children in Year 1 do not come to school regularly enough (Band 2) – this creates gaps in learning that are incredibly difficult to fill.

We strongly urge parents of children in Year 1 to work as a family to improve attendance and move into Band 1. We are here to help and support you!

Children from Year 2 to Year 5 have good attendance! Thank you to all of our families in these year groups!

It is great to see so many children in Band 1… but these numbers could be even higher. Please try to come to school every day from now until the summer holidays – there is still time for those in Band 2 to move up to Band 1 and receive an end of year reward!

If your child is persistently absent (Band 3 – Band 10), we are here to help and support you!

For far too many children in Year 6, attendance is not good enough. Far too many children have taken holiday during term time in Year 6 this year.

Year 6 is a very important year, not just in terms of children showing us all that they have learned through the SATs examinations, but also in terms of preparation for high school.

Unfortunately this year we have experienced poor attendance in Year 6 and the impact is visible in the classroom: a significant number of children have developed gaps in essential learning, many are struggling to embed consistently good learning behaviours and large numbers are finding social situations challenging. This inevitably leads to anxiety.

We strongly urge all parents of children in Year 6 to strive for 100% attendance between now and the end of the year so that they can access a broad education, achieve their full potential and be ready for high school. We are here to help and support you!
